Nickname Curious

  • Dear Amber:

--Why do humans create "pet nicknames" for us instead of using the name they gave us? Example: I started out as Amber Mae at the shelter, then became Ensign Amber when I was adopted, which quickly became AmBam, Madam AmBam, and now they call me "Amberlicious", sometimes just Lish for short! ~~Nickname Curious

  • Dean Nickname Curious:

Humans make fun pet nicknames you call us based upon our personalities. For example, you have large alluring eyes, a big bushy tail that you sashay all around the house, your tongue is always out and your front two paws turn out in ballet second position when you sit down. Your paw-rents could eat you up you're so cute - in other words you are delicious - thus "Amberlicious".

Not Spoiled Pup

  • Dear Amber,

Why do my paw-rents keep calling me spoiled when they were the ones who bought me a memory foam bed and an organic chicken diet?

~~Not spoiled pup

  • Dear Not Spoiled Pup,

Dog paw-rents actually love to spoil their pups. Spoiling you makes them feel like they are reciprocating the companionship and joy that you bring into their lives. It is a form of showing their love for you. So, enjoy being spoiled and the perks - you are special.

Imageless

  • Dear Amber,

Do dogs normally recognize themselves in a mirror?Mom keeps holding me up in front of a mirror saying "see - it's you".  However, I just see some strange dog looking back at me.

~~Imageless

  • Dear Imageless:

No, dogs do not see themselves in a mirror.  Instead, they see the reflection as if it is another dog which can lead to playfulness, barking or aggressive behavior.  Dogs primarily rely on their sense of smell for self-recognition, not sight.  Over time dogs learn to ignore mirrors realizing that the strange dog is not real and will not cause any harm.  Give your mom a lick to let her know you love her next time she holds you in front of the mirror, and we'll keep this a secret between us :)

5 O'Clock Kid

  • Dear Amber,

My paw-rents don't undersstand that I need my dinner at 5pm every night.  Mom says I do not have a sense of time, it is just a coincidence that the clock reads 5pm every time I get hungry.  Do dogs have a sense of time?

~~5 O'Clock Kid

  • 5 O'Clock Kid:

Yes dogs have a sense of time.  However, a dog's sense of timing is based upon routine and environmental cues, not hours and minutes.  Dogs have a circadian rhythm which is an internal biological clock that influences their sleep, wake and meal cycles.  This rhythm, combine with a dog's heightened senses such as smell, give him/her the ability to anticipate daily patterns.  Just keep showing up at 5 O'Clock and eventually your paw-rents will figure it out - be patient and remember they have a lot to learn :)
